How to save 5 bux
Let me preface this by saying: This is just something I noticed, and have never done. Nor would I condone doing this.
I miss digging into applications, and I get the itch a lot, and I kinda hope I inspire some kid to get into web app hacking.
First off, the web has gone mobile, there is no doubt about it. One part of this ‘transformation’ that has been bugging me lately, is the idea that mobile devices are some how different then a computer. For example Spoitify charges extra to send music to a ipad vrs their native mac or pc client. There are plenty of other examples. Charging more for traffic that is sent to a mobile device etc. All of this to me seems a little silly. Treat all devices the same. At the end of the day, this is the drum beat to establish a metered premium for mobile devices. Keep those eyes open kids….
OK got the political rant out of the way, now on to the goods. Unless you have been in a box for the last few years, you may now use the internet on an AIRPLANE!!! I think Louis C.K says it best.
How does this relate, well GoGo seems to think a laptop should pay $12.95, but an iPad or iPhone should only pay $7.95. Try it! I am currently on an AirTran flight, and they must have some type of rev share with GoGo, because not all flights do this. Some Virgin America flights are the same price for each device.
So it got me thinking, why don’t I make my computer look like an iPhone :-) .
Here is how you do it: ( on a mac )
- Close Safari
- Open a terminal session, type this command ( it turns on a debug menu in Safari )
defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1
- Open Safari and go to the Debug menu, then change the user agent to iPhone 4
- Get on the GoGo wireless network ( usually called gogoinflight )
- Your browser is now ‘acting’ as an iphone
- You should notice the price is now $7.95
- Go through the registration process and pay
- Once complete change the user-agent back to Safari ( or use Chrome like me )
- Profit!!
